2018 is Thibaud Clerget’s forth vintage at Domaine Y. Clerget and it is great to see him taking the reins of the family Domaine that was founded in 1268. Thibaud made some blockbuster Volnay and Pommard this year, buyers will require patience to let these wines age.


Tasting Notes

Meursault 2018

Harvested on the 2nd of September. 20% new oak. A generous profile of ripe stone fruits and fleshy lemons. An honest village level Meursault. (83/100)

Volnay 2018

A blend of two parcels, one 65 year old and the other 45 year old. 35hl/ha. No new oak. Great concentration and density for a village Volnay. Densely packed bouquet of dark berries and fresh earthy note. Some dry extract with good phenolic ripeness. A village Volnay with substantial substance and depth. (84/100)

Volnay 1er Cru Cailleret 2018

20% new oak. A lifted nose of fresh dark fruits and mild summer flowers. A big step up in richness and depth. Vibrant with a gentle floral bouquet. Great acidity and structured backbone. (86/100)

Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 2018

100% destemmed. Clay soil. Smoky dark earth, blackberries, and low pitched wood spices. Great concentration and big-boned dark fruits. Intense with densely packed fruits. Needs 10 years of ageing minimum. (86/100)

Volnay 1er Cru Mitan 2018

50% new oak. 50% whole cluster. An aromatic bouquet of juicy red fruits, deeply laced spices and ripe stems. Floral with a dense layer of red fruits and earth. Structured and intense with good density. (86-87/100)

Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil Monopole 2018

30% new oak. 100% destemmed. 12 barrels produced in 2018. An expressive array of sweet and juicy red berries, dark cherries, and deeply laced spices. Glossy fruits with proper Premier Cru depth. Firm structure with good acidity. 3.48pH. Will require 8-10 years of ageing. (87+/100)

Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillererts 2018

40% new oak. 100% destemmed. From 80 year old vines, very low yield 20hl/ha in 2018. Fragrant raspberries, wild berries and dark spices. A big-boned Volnay with great richness and firm backbone. Lots of fruit intensity for the long haul. (87/100)

Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 2018

30% new oak. 20% whole cluster. 14 barrels made from 1 hectare of vineyard (mostly 80 years old). A darker array of fruits compared to the Volnay. Juicy blueberries, densely packed cherries and ample fine grained tannins. Concentrated and muscular with a nice ripe stemmy lift. Will require 10 years of ageing. Good substance. (87-88/100)

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2018

50% new oak. 50% whole cluster. Thibaud’s Clos Vougeot parcel is located in Grand Maupetul. 5 barrels produced in 2018. 35hl/ha. Dark and sleek fruits with powerful structure. Densely packed array of blackberries, red cherries, mild floral whole cluster note underneath the blanket of tannins. This will require 15years of cellaring minimum. (89/100)
